MALLIE MONDAYS

OCTOBER
2023

October is a special month for the blog, because it first began in October 2020 - 3 whole years ago (if you can believe it). Never did I think that we’d be here. Back when I first started Mallie Mondays, I had a lot of people doubting if I’d be able to keep the stunt up. Including myself.

Well here we are 3 years later - and no matter how busy I get or how late I post a playlist, Mallie Mondays is still going strong. I don’t think I ever plan on stopping, either. While I’ve cut down the writing portion of the blog (I just couldn’t maintain it with work and other personal writing projects), my passion for the music, now and always, is like a small, permanently lit flame inside of me. I get incredible joy from piecing songs together. Something I’ve been doing since I first got my grubby little hands on CDs and LimeWire. If I haven’t quit the music after 15+ years, I doubt I ever will. It’s my escape, my one true love.

Now this October is a lot more toned down than last October. This year’s playlist is more for my seasonally depressed girlies. Bella rotting by the window for 5 months waiting for Edward to come back type of playlist. Amy Dunne watching her husband wipe the snow off his 20-something girlfriend’s lips. Folklore/evermore era. For everyone who had no friends in high school and ate their lunches on the gym bathroom floor. For everyone who never fit in and loved it that way. Jennifer eating the boys who wronged her. Anna Karenina jumping in front of that train. Three women and their horrid love lives. For the witches. For the burned. For the spooky. For the heartbroken. For the misunderstood. For the mad women.

For the creeps.

Happy October, Happy Halloween, and happy listening. Don’t forget to check out my October’s past playlists below, in case this year’s isn’t quite your vibe. I also have a few evergreen Halloween ‘master playlists,’ which are great for parties and are all Mallie Mondays’ fan favorites. Listen to these when you’re getting ready this weekend with your crew!

BOO!

Playlist Highlights:

Claim Your Ghost - Iron & Wine

Favorite lyrics:
Claim your ghost, know the wine for what it is
There's light holding onto the ground
Our music is clumsy and free
Killers let go, killers let go

Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood - Nina Simone

Favorite lyrics:
Oh, oh-oh-oh, baby, I'm just human
Don't you know I have faults, like anyone?
Sometimes, I find myself alone, regretting some little foolish thing
Some simple thing that I've done
'Cause I'm just a soul whose intentions are good
Oh, Lord, please, don't let me be misunderstood

Kind of Woman - Stevie Nicks

Favorite lyrics:
You didn't mean to meet her you cry
Oh but the sun goes down every night
She came to you when you were alone
And yes she matters to you
Kind of woman that'll haunt you
Kind of woman that'll haunt you
She matters to you

Maroon - Taylor Swift

Favorite lyrics:
How the hell did we lose sight of us again?
Sobbin' with your head in your hands
Ain't that the way shit always ends?
You were standin' hollow-eyed in the hallway
Carnations you had thought were roses, that's us
I feel you no matter what
The rubies that I gave upAnd I lost you
The one I was dancin' with
In New York, no shoes

Ballad Of Big Nothing - Elliott Smith

Favorite lyrics:
Dragging down the main
The helpless little thing with the dirty mouth
Who's always got something to say

Crying Lightning - Arctic Monkeys

Favorite lyrics:
Your pastimes, consisted of the strange
And twisted and deranged
And I love that little game you had called
"Crying Lightning"
And how you like to aggravate the ice-cream man on rainy afternoons

Keep The Streets Empty For Me - Fever Ray

Favorite lyrics:
There is room in my lap
For bruises, asses, handclaps
I will never disappear
For forever, I'll be here Whispering
Morning, keep the streets empty for me
Morning, keep the streets empty for me

Put Me Together - Everything Everything

Favorite lyrics:
And there's somebody washing the car
And there's somebody watching the children
But they're nothing like you and me
They're nothing like you and me
They celebrate all of the same days
And you see them out doing the garden
But they're nothing like you and me
They're nothing like you and me

Gangsta's Paradise - Coolio, L.V.

Favorite lyrics:
But I ain't never crossed a man that didn't deserve it
Me be treated like a punk, you know that's unheard of
You better watch how you talkin' and where you walkin'
Or you and your homies might be lined in chalk

Gold Gun Girls - Metric

Favorite lyrics:
I remember when we we're gambling to win
Everybody else said better luck next time
I don't wanna bend, let the bad girls bend
I just wanna be your friend
Why you giving me a hard time?
I remember when we we're gambling to win
Everybody else said
Is it ever gonna be enough

ballad of a homeschooled girl - Olivia Rodrigo

Favorite lyrics:
Cat got my tongue
And I don't think I get along with anyone
Blood runnin' cold
I'm on the outside of the greatest inside joke
And I hate all my clothes
Feels like my skin doesn't fit right over my bones
So I guess I should go
The party's done, and I'm no fun, I know, I know
I know, I know!

BSC - Maisie Peters

Favorite lyrics:
If you don't love me, what was April?
You played a game but I run the table
Mister "I don't want a label"
You made me little miss unstable and it -
Broke me big time!
It's funny and I'm laughing, baby
You think I'm alright
But I'm actually bloody motherfucking batshit crazy!

Honorable Mention:

‘Cool Girl Monologue’

Not technically a song, but a favorite off the playlist nonetheless. This monologue from ‘Gone Girl’ is, in fact, my Roman Empire.

“...Cool girl. Men always use that, don’t they? As their defining compliment. She’s a Cool girl. Cool girl is hot. Cool girl is game. Cool girl is fun. Cool girl never gets angry at her man. She only smiles in a chagrin loving manner and then presents her mouth for fucking. She like what he likes. So, evidently, he’s vinyl hipster who loves fetish monger. If he likes girls gone wild, she’s a mall babe who talks football and endures buffalo wings at Hooters. When I met Nick Dunne, I knew he wanted a cool girl and for him, I’ll admit, I was willing to try. I wax stripped my pussy raw. I drank canned beer watching Adam Sandler movies. I ate cold pizza and remained a size 2. I blew him… semi regularly. I lived in the moment. I was fucking game. I can’t say I didn’t enjoy some of it… Nick teased out in my things I didn’t know existed. A lightness, a humour, an ease. But I made him smarter, sharper, I inspired him to rise to my level. I forged the man of my dreams.

We were happy pretending to be other people. We were the happiest people we knew. And what’s the point of being together if you’re not the happiest. But Nick got lazy. He became someone I did not agree to marry. He actually expected me to love him unconditionally then he dragged me, penniless, to the naval of this great country and found himself a newer, younger, bouncier Cool Girl. You think I’d let him destroy me and end up happier than ever?

No fucking way. He doesn’t get to win.”
